This year the holidays have come around so fast! I thought this pillow Norma designed says it all "SIMPLIFY".. this year I have asked my family to donate clothes, blankets and such to the "Road Home" (a homeless shelter). I listen to the stories of people who are in need and it makes me cry! Most of us have way too much stuff! It is time to give to those in need! I am going to a family Christmas party tonight and I am planning on filling up Auntie Joyce's sleigh with all the coats, shoes, socks, blankets it can possibly hold because Norma and I are headed to the Road Home.. it is time to give and not just receive!

I hope you all have a wonderful Holiday Season!!! Enjoy your family and friends and of course, HAPPY QUILTING MY FRIENDS!!!

Fly Me Away

I love to take vacations... I work for Continental Airlines and love to fly to fun new places. When I started making this quilt with all the "flying geese" blocks (736 yikes) I kept thinking about when and where I wanted to Fly Me Away to next! I love to make quilts with lots of pieces as you can tell by a few of my quilts. My quilts are like eating an elephant... take one bite at a time.. and before you know it you are finished!!!

Three thousand miles later, a successful and overwhelming Fall Market in Houston is behind us! We had visitors from Spain, Brazil, Korea, Austrailia, Belgium, and France. Even though it was satisfying making many new friends it was the visit from old friends that we enjoyed the most. Now, I am not saying they were "old"...just our wonderful previous acquaintances. We are amazed at all of the help and encouragement we have received from other quilters. It feels good to have our work validated. Life is Good!

Picking Apples

Every Fall my mother would visit a local apple orchard. There she would pick a variety of apples. There would be apples for eating fresh, apples that would be made into applesauce, and apples for pie and crisp. We would hurry home from school to the aroma of cinnamon and apples cooking. After finding the perfect apple to eat we’d head out to do our farm chores.

Did you know the Johnny Appleseed was not just a legend, he was a real man? He was born John Chapman and was a skilled pioneer nursery man. He traveled around the country spreading his precious trees. Wouldn’t he be pleased about the many varieties we enjoy today? Honey Crisp apples are my favorite!

Norma is out of town so I guess it is up to me to update the blog. She has gone on a fun trip with quilting friends to Ohio.. I had to stay home this time because my 85 year old father had a total knee replacement (not fun!). He is doing great.. but I am sure missing my friends! I have been working on getting the new patterns ready for quilt market. I am so inspired by every block. I have made a few but Norma is incredible! I am lucky to have such a talented partner! I think this is such a great block! Norma is an incredible designer.. Each block is different and inspiring. We are getting the pattern ready for Fall Quilt Market in Houston. Once again, another tulip! While I'm on tulips, let me suggest to you a great springtime get away to Pella, Iowa for their tulip festival. It was a highlight for me the first week in May this past year, and I'm hoping to go back this next year also. I like the simplicity of this block with a bunny resting under the tulip.

The Barn

This is about me growing up on a farm in Minnesota where we had a red barn, and had cows, pigs and chickens. Our cows were dairy cows and we milked an average of 50 cows. The positive side of this we had thick whipping cream which was useful in making home made icecream! I love that I grew up on a farm and I cherish the many memories I have from that experience. I also love my connection to the midwest. - Norma

I love to think and speculate about the presence of angels all around us, and I also love these words by Longfellow, so it seemed like a likely match to put them together in the creating of this block. This quilt is all put together and is at the quilters. We have such a wonderful creative quilter, so I'm looking forward to see the finished quilt.

I designed this block to celebrate diversity. After spending time with a very dear friend who has bi-racial grandchildren and hearing the discriminating and unkind comments that were made at her grandchild's expense, I was prompted to set these two little girls in a tree together and to make them best friends.

I love these birds just because! They remind me of two people in love, looking into each others eyes as they exchange their marriage vows. Every wedding I attend, and the simple weddings are my favorite, I always try to make it an occasion to remember my own wedding, and feel thankful that I've been fortunate to have married my best friend. - Norma

Hollyhock Garden

How does your garden grow? My sister lived on a wonderful farm in Illinois and she had a wonderful 3 story farm house with a great big porch, and she had Hollyhocks! I'm the youngest in our family and she was the eldest of 5 children. When she moved to Ill. after marriage, every summer I had lengthy stays at her farm, and those idyllic summers hold some of my fondest memories, and some of those memories include the hollyhocks. This portly little lady in no way depicts my sister! By the way, I've noticed that with all of the wonderful rain we've received here in Utah, the hollyhocks have been beautiful. -Norma

New Pattern Holder

At the last Market in S.L.C., I decided there was deffinitely a better way to handle our patterns. I had to get down on my hands and knees with my rather no so small backside aimed at the isle and passerbys. ( now I'm wondering if passerbys is even a word), but I'm certain you get the picture. Needless to say it isn't a pretty picture! On with the story....our patterns were stored under a table, so Joyce and I quickly decided that we needed a change. So my talented son, made us a couple of holders with detachable legs for easy packing. We are in the process of deciding what color we want to paint them.

Our good friends from Homestead Hearth called today to place an order and what did I hear over the phone - - - Woof, woof, woof,.. and then Delores said, "use your inside voice." How cute is that???
Let me tell you, it made my day! I didn't know dogs had inside voices. A bulldog resides at their store as their mascot. Check out all their fun stuff! I want to go see this shop some day.. it is on my wish list!

Working Weekend?

We love adventure, we stopped, we paused, we pondered, and deliberated..... and then we decided that was more "back to nature" the we were ready for! (Beaver Creek Nudist Ranch)

I have a metal stake in a planter on my patio that states, "Life is Good"... Joyce and I came up to her cabin high in the Uinta Mountains. We passed through 11,000 feet on our way over the summit, where we met 'GIGANTIC' rotary snow blower type machines, snow was being blown to either side, opening a way for cars to pass over the top.
When we arrived at the cabin there was no snow, only meadows of wildflowers; Lupine, columbine, daises, roses and may delicate ferns. The back drop of this is miles and miles of Pine trees and Aspen and Fresh Mountain air.

Joyce and I are not going to to be in any pictures because we have chosen to stay in out P.J's. (Joyce snuck this picture in) We spare a brief moment or two for a shower, fresh P.J.'s and a hasty return to the deck where we stitch and watch the birds at the feeders.

A woodpecker, a very energetic and persistant fellow, has pecked a hole into the side of a pine tree big enough to create a cozy home. Here are a few pictures just outside the cabin...

Our departure from this lovely spot is just around the corner. Our stay is never long enough. However, inspiration arrived and our souls have been renewed and most of all we come to the conclusion that our blessings are too numerous to list. Our gratitue bank has been replenished!!!Here's evidence that all snow has to go somewhere! "Majestic"

Hi friends! I am working on another fun scrap quilt. I love using such fabrics.. plaids, shirtings and civil war fabrics are wonderful when used together. Do we ever have enough scraps? I went over to Norma's house and went through her scrap bin.. why is it someone elses scraps look so better than our own??? I think when you are working on scrap projects we should all share our scraps it adds interesting fabrics to our quilt and stretches our creative possibilities.

I love using a little "cheddar" in my scrap quilts.
I found this plaid in Norma's scrap bin and wanted it in this quilt. I think it looks fun.

Each block is relatively easy to make. Flying geese using our method are a cinch... which is good because this quilt will be loaded with them.

New Pattern in the Works!

I have been working on this needle case for quite awhile.. I kind of lost my excitement on it..but then Norma gently pushed me along to get it finished! I am so glad I just have the label to do and I totally love it! It is a gift for my friend Louise. She has chickens in her yard and she calls them her "yard birds". I love visiting her and feeding those cute yard birds.. and the egss are wonderful!

The pillow I was wishing for!

Surprise everyone, Joyce gave me blogging lessons today. I'm feeling kind of like a techie! This pillow was on my wish list to make, and then it just appeared one day on my couch. Lucky me. We are now busily thinking about the Fall market in Houston, and that means we better get creative. We have lots of ideas buzzing around in our heads. Some days I feel like my brain might explode because I have all of my home health patients on my mind too. However, I am just where I want to be, and doing what I enjoy. I hope all of you are so lucky.

I went to the most wonderful quilt retreat! American Quilting has such a fun retreat! We got tons of prizes and it was in a beautiful resort in Midway Utah. I taught my survivor quilt shown above!

See these two "spunky chicks" in Ireland.. They have become new business partners! Have you ever purchased a "Remember When" quilt pattern? Well "Remember When" has become "Geoff's Mom".. Are you confused... don't be. Leslie Ison and Norma Whaley owned "Remember When".. but Leslie has decided it is time to retire. We are all great friends and Norma wants to keep designing and making patterns.... Soooo Norma has decided to become "Geoff's Mom" friend! I am so excited! The business is just taking off in leaps and bounds. We will be at Spring Quilt Market in May in Salt Lake City and we are also planning on going to Houston market in the fall. Please come and support us! Leslie will still be making quilts and spending time with her children and grand children. Plus she still plans on teaching with Norma.. all is good! Things to come

As I sit here thinking about how long it has been since I last blogged... I have to remind myself it isn't about getting to do things everyday or every month.. it is about doing things we enjoy and make us happy! This has been a very busy, trying year but I am so very grateful to have such wonderful caring friends to get through the good and bad times!
It is Christmas eve and I want to wish all my friends a wonderful holiday season and thanks for being my FRIEND!

I have needed a vacation! so... my friend Norma and I went to Cancun for a week for some much needed relaxation! This was the view out our window.. isn't it grand? We stitched and stitched.. took naps.. watched movies and yes went to the beach! Mango margaritas are incredible!

I finally got two quilts finished! Woo Hoo! Life gets in the way of my quilting sometimes!

I am surviving right now.. things here have been stressful "they" (who ever they is) say things come in threes and I believe it.. my dog got diabetes, my mom got cancer and I lost my job after almost 10 years.. thank god I am surviving it all! One door closes another opens.. I am a firm believer!

This is my newest baby quilt pattern. I am calling it "The Kid". Geoff's friends are having their first baby and that is what they are nick naming him right now.. he hasn't been born yet but I think he was due yesterday... so any day now.

Life here is going on and I enjoy having time to sew! I have had such a horrible work shift the last 6 months working 2am to 1030am that it is nice to be back to sleeping and having "normal" hours. So forgive me for not blogging much but know I am thinking about it.

Spring Cleaning!

Spring has arrived and that means no more procrastinating! Norma and Leslie pitched in to help clean my sewing room! Here they are trying to decide whether to keep or donate to a worthy cause. It is great to have friends decide these things.. takes the worry away! Here they are folding fabric and putting into bins...

I love my pin cushions.. and Norma will not throw away a pin.. so she kept sticking them in my cute pin cushions.

Oh yes.. one more organizer.. love the shoe organizer I put on the closet door helps keep the odd sized stuff together..

So now you know why.. I haven't blogged because I haven't had much time.. it is amazing how much I had accumulated.. yikes it can be scarrrry! Thanks to my wonderful friends I now have a great place to sew! More patterns to come..

Sorry no pictures today! My new quilt "Survivors" is at the quilter.. she loaded it last night.. I am so excited! She was wondering how to quilt it? I love what she does with my quilts so I always let her decide.. I wish I was better with quilting patterns but I am not. Girl Gang and a new baby quilt!

We had girl gang on Wednesday night and here are a few of the pictures.. we do have talented women in our group! This quilt was made by Debra Hale.. Debra and Kerry have figured out the correct pattern instructions and will be teaching this class at Elaine's sometime soon! Isn't it great!

This is my latest baby quilt.. called "Baby E.J.".. didn't know quite what to call is because I wanted to name it after the baby I made it for but his name is going to be Ethan Jefferson.. but the quilt didn't feel like Ethan or Jefferson.. so what do you do? of course E.J.! That works!

I wanted to show you what I am currently working on.. This is totally out of the box for me. I love the pink. There is just something about Civil War reproductions that appeal to me so much! I am thinking about naming the quilt "Survivors" .. We all have survivors in our lives or we are currently surviving something! Let me know what you think.. comments are welcomed!

Sunny Days!

I started this pattern several months ago and got it back from the quilter recently. I am naming it "Sunny Days". I love to use reproduction fabrics.. I also love to use muslin and cotton batting. I almost always wash my quilts after I am finished to help achieve the "old" look. This pattern so be out shortly... just got to get the photo taken.

Wow! I am shocked another post and it is only January! Many of my friends will be surprised. My new website is coming along.. hopefully it will be up and running by the first part of February.

No! New Years resolutions for me... I usually just say I will try and do things better in the New Year!

I thought it would be fun to show you a few of the new pictures of my patterns I just had taken. I think getting pictures to look right is one of the hardest parts of making patterns to sell.

I have been gone from the blogging world for awhile.. sorry friends! Let me think.. I have been to VT, MA, NH and then to Belize. October was a very busy month! I took a new quilt to the quilter today.. new pattern will be out very soon! I did have time to read a couple of books in my travels and make this wall hanging for my sister.. This is my newest pattern! I named this quilt after my great-aunt "Belle" she taught me to quilt. She always seemed to have a quilt on the frames in her living room. I use to stay at her house with my cousin and we would play under the quilt frames and I was always intrigued watching her take all those tiny stitches. she was my inspiration in making this quilt. I hope you enjoy!

My girlfriend Louise and I had a mini retreat in St. George. We decided to make these cute pincushions with the thread catchers. It was so much fun to laugh and get time together to sew. I am working on my next pattern.. I showed you the picture of the block in my last post.

Well I got the kids to help out with the canning. This is the last of it for awhile.. I hope. They are putting the pears in the bottles for me. My son has grown up with me bottle so he gets the whole idea. My daughter in law is great to pitch in helping whenever it is needed. I am so lucky to have them. Who would believe these two are very traditional! We do most of the canning for my parents who are in their 80's for Christmas gifts.

I started a new quilt this week! I haven't decided on a name yet.. if you have suggestions I do love to hear them!

It is Canning Season!

Here is the reason I have not been blogging lately! Thought I would share a few pictures!These Dill Pickles my friend Norma and I made last Sunday! We ended up bottling 37 quarts and had a great time! I bottled Danish Mustard pickles yesterday and today I am going to finish up the last of the cucumbers to make a few more jars. My whole family is addicted to these pickles and I never seem to make enough.. yesterday I made 24 pints.. I will probably be doing at least that many more today! My sister is coming over to help me today.. we should have a great time!Then I will start on the apples for applesauce.. I love "Connie" apples.. I think they make a great applesauce!

So.. now you can understand why I haven't had a chance to blog lately!..oh.. I forgot to mention my new work shift is from 2am to 1030am and I am not quite sure when to find the time to sleep! I still have a job though and for that I am grateful! Until next time.. Have as much fun as me! (I didn't mean that sarcasticly even if it sounded that way!)

New Quilt in the Works!

Now that things are "starting" to settle down I need to get busy.. there are some retreats coming up and I would love to have a couple of new quilts ready. I need to write the patterns but still lots of sewing to get done. Here is a picture of some of the quilt blocks for the new pattern.

I love the civil war fabrics and it is fun to pull fabrics for each block. I am trying to decide what to name this quilt.. hopefully it will just come to me.. I will show you the finished project.

I will try and find a few more pictures to show you.. of the kids.. of course.. my new daughter-in-law made her own wedding dress out of white T-shirts collected from family and friends.. it was cute! She is a one of a kind and I love her lots!....

Now I get get back to business and start sewing and patterning writing.. glad that is over and it went really well.. I have some wonderful friends who helped me get through it all.

Ireland was great

My friend and I went to a cute quilt shop in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The owner was really nice and she gave me a copy of their shop hop list for Ireland. We didn't have time to go to other shops but I am planning on returning soon and taking some of my friends..it would be fun to do an Irish shop hop!

When I arrived home I got a head cold.. figures you go to a cold, damp climate and this is what you get.. but it was all worth it! Here are a few more pictures of Ireland..

This is the coastline at the top of Ireland.. the beach looks so beautiful.. but notice no swimmers.. the water is quite cold.

We drove by this bridge almost every day..

I met up with a couple of my cousins on vacation so we had a cold, but fun time! You can tell who is the Utah Fan!

Looking for the Dang Cord!

I am back from Ireland.. I had a great trip! I took lots of pictures I want to share but I have lost the cord to my camera to download them.. I know I will find it. I also came back with the worst cold I have had in years! Gotta love those airplanes and germs.. but it won't stop me from traveling. I will take my Airborne next time. Hopefully I will find the cord soon or I will order another! Until then.. bye bye

I am in Northern Ireland.. wanting to know if anyone knows of any quilt shops here. I usually come better prepared with my list in hand of local shops. I am sure there are some quilters here.. but not sure where to find them. I will look for some wool and such.. I will check back.. Page Arizona Quilting trip

Cache needs a quilt

My cute "neice" and her husband are expecting a baby in a few weeks.. so Auntie Joyce had to get busy. They told me it was going to be a boy so I decided to get busy and make a new quilt for "Cache" (hope the name stays because that is what I am going to name this new quilt pattern). I found the cutest airplane fabric at one of my favorite quilt shops... American Quilting in Orem, Utah. This was a quick and easy quilt to make. I am working on the pattern..so hopefully it will be published soon!

I also made this bag.. it is a Sue Spargo pattern called Victoria Bag. I used upolstery fabrics and I did the wool applique. It was so much fun and surprisingly easy to put together. I am in the process of making some other bags.. I will try to share pictures later.

Girl Gang 2008/09

I have been working on my Girl Gang quilt for 2008/2009! I love it! I have made a few changes to the pattern because I wanted to include a few of my favorite things.. and of course that would be my dogs.. (as you can tell a couple have gone on to doggie heaven). It is nice to be doing some fun easy applique again! I got a shot in my elbow this week and I am determined to do some sewing! I hope I didn't put too many pictures in here.. I sure am having fun! I can't figure out how to do the spacing correctly here in the blogging world.. but it won't stop me.

No Needle in over a Week

I have not been sewing at all and it is totally driving me crazy! I wonder what people do who don't QUILT.. I am at a loss for words! I have never been bored.. because I have always had plenty of projects to keep me busy.. I promised my Doc. I would take it easy for the next few weeks after the Christmas rush and rest my arm. My sister did take me to Las Vegas for a few days and spoiled me rotten.. here is a picture of my bedroom and bathroom.. she booked a suite so I could have my own space and relax in the tub; while watching tv.

Everyone needs a sister like mine!

I needed to do a quick baby quilt for a friend. I used my Big Baby Bear pattern and it worked up quickly.. now I just have to get it quilted. That is the part that seems to always take time. My dog "Abbie" loves to be in the pictures.

This is called "Civil Star Tracks". This was my first pattern and believe me the picture doesn't do the quilt justice. How do you get good pictures? I think that is one of the hardest things I try to do is to get a really good picture of the quilt.

Tennis Elbow is slowing my dang progress!

This is a quick peek at my tennis elbow... alias Quilter's Elbow. My elbow looks like a knee.. I am fine with that but not with the R-rest I-ice C-compress E-elevate (you know the RICE method)! There is new patterns to finish and new projects to start!

This is my cute Miss Abbie.. she is a Morkie (yorkie and maltese mix) she loves to help me layout my blocks!

I am trying to decided which alternate block to use? They both have specks on "Cheddar" fabrics in them...

This is my new "Cheers Me Up" Christmas quilt almost finished except for the binding. I am really happy with the results. Kind of bright and cheery don't you think?

"Cheers Me Up" (I am trying to get the name to stick)

This is Babe my Toy Fox Terrier.. we have had a bad summer. I came home from a quilting retreat in June to find she had broken her right rear leg. The leg was broken in three places. so the vet had to operate and put in a metal rod and ties to keep the leg together. Well I spent the next 6 weeks sleeping on the floor with her because my bed is to high for her to climb. After 6 weeks the vet said the leg was disinigrated the bone was gone. So, back to surgery to amputate the leg. I had to carry her everywhere and so I have now developed Tennis Elbow. Oh my gosh.. I didn't want to tell my Doc that it was really "Quilter's Elbow".. What would he think.. he is cute and now I am sure he thinks I am a total geek! But who cares.. I never want to have this dang pain again. Cortisone shots in the elbow aren't fun.

She really is doing quite well for only having 3 legs! She is my cute tripod.

I took the Christmas quilt I started in July to the quilter.. I can't wait for you to see it! I think it turned out really cute.. I named it "Cheers Me Up". I am writing the pattern today (which is no easy task..ha ha) I will put the picture on the blog when I get it home from the quilter.

I am such a Civil War fabric lover.. for some reason I have connected with the old time quilts I love the 30's fabrics too.. so here is my next new project in the works.. Tell me what you think?
